<Hello, World!/> Welcome to Rakuten RapidAPI
I’m tremendously excited to announce today the launch of Rakuten RapidAPI – a strategic partnership between Rakuten and RapidAPI to build a dominant, global-scale API Marketplace platform.
This Rakuten-branded service was crafted in close cooperation with RapidAPI, hence our decision to reflect both entities in our joint branding as partners. July 11, 2018 marks service launch in Japan but that’s only step 1. We’re eyeing expansion throughout Asia so stay tuned!
What are APIs?
In case you’re not familiar, APIs – Application Programming Interfaces are defined communication protocols which allow computer systems to communicate with one another.
A computer program consists of many components or building blocks like hardware systems, databases, operating systems, and web-based systems. APIs are used to connect these blocks; think of an API like a phone call from one system to another to retrieve and share information.
With the rise of the internet, cloud-based and SaaS services, virtualisation, and containerisation, web APIs have grown in importance. Internet/digital service companies are using web APIs to extend their business models to 3rd parties or monetise datasets in order to drive revenue.
A more interesting phenomenon is the rise of ‘Native API’ companies. These are companies whose unit economics are based on the API call as a primary unit of monetisation. The best known API names today – Twilio, Stripe, SendGrid (all founded between 2008 – 2010) are finding their groove to unicorn-scale valuations. These companies not only proved that API-based businesses were viable, but also that they’re tremendously valuable!
“The rise of ‘API Native’ companies proved not only that API-based businesses were viable, but that they could be tremendously valuable!”
Rakuten RapidAPI’s vision is to be the de-facto Developer platform for API Discovery & Consumption. This means being more than just another API directory.
When a Developer is looking for web APIs to fulfil microservices, they shouldn’t have to do Google searches, turn to ProgrammableWeb and be directed elsewhere, or be asking fellow programmers for help. They shouldn’t be managing keys and analytics on 10 different portals in order to use 10 different services. They shouldn’t be wasting their time managing API vendor relationships.
“Rakuten RapidAPI is more than just another API Directory. Our vision is to be the de-facto global Developer platform for API Discovery & Consumption”
We’re going to eliminate all that with a single interface that provides the best possible developer experience. We’re launching with a catalog of 8000+ APIs on day 1. One SDK integration handles key management for you. Our fully-integrated ‘test and connect’ window allows you to connect to integrated APIs right from the platform. Place a credit card on file and code away. We’ll take care of billing and payments at the end of each month.
For our Japanese users, we’re proud to provide a fully-localized version of our portal with 100+ APIs that have received high-touch quality human translation. The remaining are currently available as machine translated content. We’re committed to building this out as well as adding locally-relevant services and content. For larger Japanese customers, we’ll be equipped to provide invoice payment.
